What is IQF onion?

IQF stands for individually quick frozen. Once the onion is cut to size, it’s then frozen at extremely low temperature, which stops ice crystals forming and helps keep the product free flowing.

The freezing process also preserves the IQF onion’s colour, smell and flavour – and helps to lock in its nutritional value too.

As an ingredient, this makes IQF onion ideal for any application requiring identifiable onion pieces – for example pizza toppings, pie fillings or ready meals.

FAQs

What is IQF onion?

IQF onion is an Individually Quick Frozen (IQF) food product that has been cut into uniform pieces and quick-frozen for preservation. It offers convenience and a longer shelf life than fresh onions, as well as superior flavour, texture and colour. IQF onion typically lasts between six to 12 months when stored in a sealed container in a freezer. IQF onion can be cooked directly from frozen by sautéing, baking or steaming – and used as pizza toppings and in casseroles and soups.

Is IQF onion a good source of vitamins?

Yes, IQF onion is an excellent source of vitamins A and C, as well as dietary fibre. It also contains significant amounts of potassium, magnesium, calcium and iron. IQF onion does not contain any additives or preservatives. You can tell if your IQF onion is no longer safe to use because it will have an odour and change colour.

Is there a difference between fresh and IQF onions?

There are several differences between fresh and frozen onions; for example, frozen onions will retain their flavour and texture better and have a longer shelf life. However, the main difference between IQF onions and regular frozen onions is that IQF onions are cut into uniform pieces before they are frozen which makes them more convenient to use and easier to cook with. With Kiril Mischeff’s IQF onion, the product has been sourced from expert producers around the world to offer exceptional quality and convenience for food manufacturers and other food producers that need a supply of quality onions for their dishes and products.
