What is sloe concentrate?

Sloe concentrate is made by taking the juice of the plum and heating it to reduce the water content through evaporation. The result is a condensed, thickened liquid, far stronger in taste than a regular juice, and also considerably smaller in volume.

The reduced volume means sloe concentrate can be transported easily to manufacturing premises, before it is reconstituted to reform a juice later down the line.

Sloe berry juice concentrate is a thick liquid made from the juice of sloe berries, which are small, dark purple fruits that grow on blackthorn bushes. Sloe berries have a tart and bitter taste, but when they are cooked and sweetened, they produce a rich and fruity flavour. Its uses include diluting with water to make a refreshing drink; adding it to cocktails, mocktails, smoothies, or lemonades for a fruity twist. Sloe juice concentrate can also be simmered with spices and herbs to make a savoury sauce or glaze for meat, poultry, or vegetables.

Sloe juice concentrate is a versatile ingredient that can be used to make delicious drinks, sauces, jams and more. It has many benefits and is rich in antioxidants, vitamin C and anthocyanins, which can help protect against oxidative stress, inflammation and infections. It also has a low glycaemic index, which means it does not cause a rapid spike in blood sugar levels. Plus, sloe juice concentrate has a long shelf life, which makes it convenient and economical to store and use. Also, it can be frozen for up to one year. However, you should thaw it slowly in the fridge before using it.
