FAQ

What is coconut oil?

Coconut oil is the oil extracted directly from the fleshy, meaty white part of a coconut. Unlike most oils, it’s solid at room temperature – and only turns to liquid when it’s heated. That makes it useful for a wide variety of applications, not just for food products.

Is coconut oil good for you?

Many nutritionists believe that moderate consumption of coconut oil brings a wide range of health benefits. Despite it being high in saturated fats, it has a unique combination of fatty acids which are believed to have a number of positive effects.

While opinions vary on which type of oil is truly the healthiest (and little conclusive research exists), it cannot be disputed that coconut oil has a high proportion of MCFAs – medium chain fatty acids – which experts say make it less likely to be stored in the body as fat, and more likely to be used as a source of energy.

Is coconut oil good for cooking?

Coconut oil is a very versatile cooking ingredient, and can be used for frying or as a substitute for other types of oil in recipes. Depending on the variety used, it can leave fried food with a slightly coconutty flavour – but this can be preferable in some dishes, such as stir fries and curries.

What is virgin coconut oil?

Virgin coconut oil is an unrefined oil, extracted from the fresh coconut in a single press. The coconut meat is first grated and dried (at low temperature), then pressed just once to extract the oil.

As it is not pressed again, the yield is low – but the quality is high. Virgin coconut oil therefore has the strongest coconut aroma and flavour, hence it is often used in cosmetic products rather than for cooking.
